Imagine a 10 metre long, blank, white wall. The first thing you see when you walk into a home. The feature wall of the whole space. In fact, probably the most important wall in the whole house. We were called in to help decide what to do?
We firstly needed to take a very concise brief from our clients, (this being the 5th project we have done for them, so we know them very well… 🙂).
What became apparent from taking their brief was a severe lack of storage in their inner city abode. Books, quirky artwork & beloved memorabilia needed a home, (items including a real dinosaur bone & and Rod Laver’s tennis racquet… amongst other super cool things 😎).
The solution was a bespoke wall-unit. Detailed down to exactly what needed storing, (with dimensions) & to ground or ‘hold space’ for the dining & living areas, so the furniture wasn’t left floating.
I felt it was important to divide up the space into ‘stories’. The first section becoming the ‘dining story’, followed by the ‘living room story’. Then, importantly, was the space integrating the 2. It was quite the mathematical process, with proportion, ergonomics & function being paramount. The aesthetic, colour & design features, including shaker style doors & adorable ‘bun feet’, were secondary, (although important) considerations.
So you see, it’s not just something a designer ‘whips up’. In such a custom piece, it is a very complicated process. Finding a cabinetmaker or furniture maker competent enough to manufacture such a feat is also extremely critical.
After the drawings were finished, there was another process in choosing & overlaying chosen furniture, lighting, rugs & soft furnishings worthy of such a wonderful creation.
I loved every aspect of this project. Certainly got my creative juices flowing. 💗
